Self-Portrait is a 1525 ink by Dutch 16th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a man’s face and shoulders in profile, wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a fur collar. His hair is short, and his expression is serious but calm. The lines are tight and detailed, especially around his beard and hat. The artist used a technique that lets ink sit in the grooves of the metal plate, creating sharp lines and texture. This was a new way to make prints in the 1500s. Look up technique: etching to see how this method works.
This Dutch artist made engravings in the 1550s that retell the biblical story of David and Saul.
