About this work

Here’s a snapshot of the past: a photograph from 1880 shows Violet Cameron playing The Countess in *Olivette* at the Strand Theatre. Taken by Elliot & Fry, it’s a theatrical portrait meant for fans and collectors. In those days, photos like this were like early trading cards—cheap, collectible, and widely shared. People stuck them in albums or pasted them into books. If you like this peek at Victorian theater, check out the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The story of this work

Overview

A sepia-toned photograph depicts Violet Cameron in character as The Countess from the operetta *Olivette*, staged at the Strand Theatre. Produced by the London studio Elliot & Fry around 1880, the image is an albumen print mounted on card, typical of the "cartes de visite" format popular in the mid-to-late 19th century. It was later collected and preserved by Guy Tristram Little, whose extensive theatrical photographs were donated to the Victoria and Albert Museum in the early 20th century.
