About this work

The drawing shows layered shapes and lines that seem to pulse like sound waves. Some marks are sharp, others soft, forming a rhythm across the page. Dots and dashes float like notes without a staff. Maria Ender studied how people see color and form at the edges of their vision. She also explored how shapes might match sounds, believing the senses could blend. This work may reflect her experiments in seeing and hearing at once. Her methods used small, repeated marks to build texture and depth. You can see this in the careful use of technique: stippling.
