Hamlet on a Hill is a 1650 ink by Allart van Everdingen, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a small house on a grassy hill, surrounded by a wooden fence. The sky above is partly cloudy, and the ground has scattered trees and bushes. The lines are simple but detailed, giving a quiet, peaceful look to the scene. The artist used a technique that lets them carve lines into a metal plate, then press ink into those grooves to make the print. This method is called etching. Look up etching to see how it works.
Allaert van Everdingen (Dutch pronunciation: ; bapt. 18 June 1621 – 8 November 1675 (buried)), was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker in etching and mezzotint.
