Three Cottages on a Rock is a 1650 ink by Allart van Everdingen, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows three small wooden houses on a rocky hillside. Trees and bushes cover the slopes around them, and two people stand near the buildings—one near the left house, the other closer to the center. The sky is light and airy, with a few clouds and birds flying. The artist used fine lines to show details like the rough bark on trees and the texture of the houses. This kind of printmaking is called etching. Look up etching to see how artists like this carve images into metal plates.
Allaert van Everdingen (Dutch pronunciation: ; bapt. 18 June 1621 – 8 November 1675 (buried)), was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker in etching and mezzotint.
