France Watching is a 1916 ink by Jean-Louis Forain, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a woman walking beside a cow. She’s dressed in a long coat and a hat, holding something in her right hand. The cow looks calm, standing on a patchy ground with a fence in the background. The whole scene is drawn in loose, quick lines with gray and black ink. The artist used a lot of shading to show the folds in her coat and the cow’s fur. This gives the drawing a textured, almost 3D feel without too much detail.
