La route de Rocquencourt (The Road to Rocquencourt) is a 1909 ink by Jean-Louis Forain, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a quiet country road with a few small houses in the background. A lone rider on horseback moves along the path, surrounded by tall grass and trees. The lines are loose and quick, giving the scene a sketchy, unfinished feel. The artist used a technique that lets ink sit in the grooves of the metal plate, creating a textured look. This was a common way to make prints in the early 1900s. Next, check out etching to see how artists like this made prints.
