River Scene is a 1604 by Gabriel Perelle, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This print shows a grand stone church with tall towers and arched windows, sitting by a river. In front, a few people walk along a path, and boats float on the water. Trees and hills stretch out in the background, giving the scene depth. The artist used fine lines to show light and shadow, making the church look solid. This was a common way to draw in the 1600s. Look up Baroque to see how this style shaped art.
Gabriel Perelle (born 1604 in Vernon, Eure, died 1677 in Paris) was a French draftsman and printmaker of topographic views and landscapes.
