Al Dolo is a 1740 ink by Canaletto, a Baroque work, depicting Grand Canal, held at National Gallery of Art.
Canaletto’s *Al Dolo* shows a quiet canal scene with gondolas, buildings, and a small crowd. The etching uses fine lines to capture light on the water and the texture of stone. You can almost hear the water lap against the boats. The technique is drypoint. Canaletto scratched lines directly into a metal plate. Each scratch raised a rough edge that held extra ink, making the shadows look velvety. Try making your own drypoint. Look up Canaletto at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Giovanni Antonio Canal (18 October 1697 – 19 April 1768), commonly known as Canaletto (Italian: ), was an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice, considered an important member of the 18th-century Venetian school.
