Joust of Peace in Leg Armor is a 1514 watercolor by German 16th Century, a Renaissance work, depicting Armor, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two knights in shiny armor jousting. Their long lances cross in mid-air. Flags flap behind them. The artist drew it with fine brown ink, then added soft watercolor washes. The colors stay mostly earthy browns and tans. Only the flags and armor pick up bright red and gold. The paper itself has a faint grid of lines, called laid lines, that help hold the ink. Notice how the riders’ legs bend to keep their balance on the moving horses. Want to see more close-ups of ink and watercolor? Look up watercolor, glazing.
A German artist from the late 1500s drew lively scenes of knights clashing in parades and mock battles.
