About this work

This print shows a chaotic sea battle with gods and nymphs tangled in the waves. In the center, a muscular woman rides a shell-shaped chariot pulled by sea creatures, her hair whipping in the wind. Around her, half-naked figures wrestle—some wielding spears, others clutching nets. Above, cherubs float in the sky, firing arrows like they’re playing a game. The whole scene is packed with swirling lines and dramatic shadows. The artist used deep contrasts between light and dark to make the figures pop. Look at how the woman’s face glows against the shadowy water—it’s all about sharp edges and bold shapes. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how this lighting trick works.
