Painted in 1644, this cityscape was commissioned and executed by Jan van Goyen as part of his topographical oeuvre. The work’s early history traces to Eugene Glaenzer (New York and Paris), who may have acted on behalf of Jacques Seligmann (Paris and New York), before it was sold in 1906 to Baron Vladimir de Gunzburg. Upon the Baron’s death it passed by inheritance to his son, Serge de Gunzburg, and was subsequently sold on 8 February 1978 through Heim Gallery, Paris, to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
