Garzia dei Medici is a 1691 ink by Adriaen Haelwegh, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white portrait shows a young boy in fancy clothes. His jacket has lots of buttons and a high collar, and he’s sitting with one arm resting on a carved ledge. The background is a dark oval shape with swirls and leaves around the edges. The name at the bottom reads *Garzia dei Medici*, which means this is a portrait of a Medici family member. The artist used fine lines to create shadows and texture—this is called cross-hatching. Next, check out how engraving works to see how artists like this made detailed prints.
