Armand de Bourbon, Prince de Condi is a 1643 ink by Claude Mellan, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of a young man with curly hair and a serious expression. He’s wearing a dark, ruffled collar and a simple coat. The background is just a plain oval frame with no extra details. The artist used fine lines to create shadows and texture, especially in the hair and fabric. The bottom of the image has a small crest with two letters and three fleur-de-lis symbols. If you like this style, check out engraving to see how artists use lines to make depth.
Claude Mellan (1598–1688) was a French artist, born in Abbeville.
