This black-and-white print shows a serious-looking man with curly hair and a mustache. He’s facing slightly to the left, his expression thoughtful, and the background is plain. The oval shape around him looks like it’s framed by a woven texture. The print is labeled “Selden,” and the small text says it’s based on a painting in the Bodleian Library. It was made using a method called *stipple engraving*—tiny dots create the shading. Next, check out engraving to see how artists build light and shadow with dots.
