This is a close-up of a woman’s face, wrapped in a patterned scarf. The lines are soft, almost like a sketch, with gentle shading around her cheeks and chin. Guérard made this print after his wife, Eva Gonzalès, died. She had painted the same woman years earlier, probably as a nod to Manet, her teacher. The original painting is gone, so this print is all we have left. If you want to see more prints like this, look up impasto.
