Chelmonski employed loose, economical brushwork with soft blending rather than crisp detail, applying thin, sketch-like paint to the support. The palette is dominated by warm browns, umbers, and muted earth tones, with subtle variations across the horse's body suggesting musculature and volume. Light falls gently on the horse's back and flank, while the legs and lower body dissolve into shadow. The surface shows visible canvas weave, and the overall finish appears matte and somewhat abraded, with scattered surface wear and age marks visible. The work demonstrates the realist style that characterized Chelmonski's output.

While the inception of the work is recorded as 1869, the artist's signature in the bottom right corner includes the date and location of 1873, Munich. This suggests the painting may have been started earlier and finished or signed during Chelmonski's Munich period. The work eventually entered the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw, where it remains today. In 2024 and 2025, the National Museums in Warsaw, Poznan, and Krakow held large monographic exhibitions of Chelmonski's work as part of an interdisciplinary research project, which may have included this study.

Jozef Chelmonski was a leading representative of Polish Realism, active in Munich, Paris, and Warsaw. His artistic development was shaped by his studies at Wojciech Gerson's Drawing School in Warsaw and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he worked alongside Polish painters such as Jozef Brandt and Maksymilian Gierymski. His work was deeply influenced by the plain Mazovian landscape of his native Lowicz region and the nature of the Eastern Borderlands. While his oeuvre defies unequivocal classification due to his original, instinctual talent, his work also touched on Young Poland Symbolism and Polish Patriotic Painting, movements that sought to express national identity during the era of partitioned Poland.

Chelmonski's early studies of horses laid the groundwork for his later, more dynamic compositions. The motif of the horse remained central to his most famous monumental paintings, such as Partridge on the Snow and the 1881 canvas Four-in-hand, which depicts a team of horses galloping at near life-size scale. His paintings of rural life and landscapes were highly sought after during his lifetime, including exhibitions at the Artistic Salon of Zygmunt Bartkiewicz in Lodz in 1897. Today, his major works are held in the Sukiennice National Art Gallery in Krakow and the National Museum in Warsaw, and his creative process continues to be the subject of extensive interdisciplinary research and conservation efforts.
