About this work

This painting shows a grand building perched on a rocky hill by a river. In the foreground, a few people are washing clothes near the water’s edge, while boats rest on the shore. The sky is soft and cloudy, and the colors are mostly muted earth tones with some greens and blues. Notice how the artist uses light to show the texture of the rocks and buildings. The brushstrokes are loose but careful, giving the scene a dreamy feel. Look up James Holland to see more of his watercolor landscapes.
