Four Religious and Secular Compositions is a 1764 ink by Jean Jacques II Lagrenée, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows four quick scenes stacked in rows. The top two rows have rough, busy drawings of people in action—some look like battles or crowds, others like stories from long ago. The bottom two rows are smaller, with more figures in motion, some holding tools or weapons. The lines are scratchy and uneven, like fast notes. The artist used a method called *etching* to carve into metal, then ink it. The paper has a textured edge, which was common back then. Check out how *etching* works next.
Jean Jacques II Lagrenée (1762–1763) was an artist.
