Mlle Camargo is a 1750 by Nicolas Lancret, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
The painting shows a woman, Mlle Camargo, in a elegant dress and high-heeled shoes. She's a dancer, and what's interesting is that she helped change the way dancers dressed by shortening her skirts to show off her footwork. This was a new style at the time. To learn more about the artistic style used to create this print, look into the technique of chiaroscuro.
In a wooded setting, a dancer performs with musicians present. She balances on her right leg, her left leg raised to the side, arms extended and head turned left, wearing an 18th-century low-necked dress with a pointed bodice, short frilled sleeves, and a floral garland across the front. The skirt, reaching mid-calf with scalloped edges, is paired with heeled shoes, while her hair is styled in tight curls adorned with flowers. The musicians and parts of the dancer’s attire are tinged red, and an accompanying verse praises her artistry and movement.
