Poet (Le poete) is a 1874 ink by Alphonse Legros, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a dark, shadowy portrait of a bearded man with long hair. His face is mostly in shadow, but you can see his eyes and mouth. The background is almost completely black, making his face stand out slightly. The artist used a mix of lines and shading to create depth. This kind of printmaking is called *aquatint*, where different tones are layered to look like watercolor. Look up etching, drypoint, aquatint to see how artists create these textures.
Alphonse Legros (French pronunciation: ; 8 May 1837 – 8 December 1911) was a French, later British, painter, etcher, sculptor, and medallist.
