Rope-yards (Les corderies) is a 1874 ink by Alphonse Legros, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a black-and-white scene of a landscape with lots of thick, tangled lines. The lines look like ropes or cables, piled high in the center. In the background, there’s a faint outline of buildings and trees, but the ropes dominate the picture. The artist used a technique that lets them scratch into the metal plate to create texture. This makes the ropes look almost three-dimensional. Next, look up etching to see how artists create these detailed prints.
Alphonse Legros (French pronunciation: ; 8 May 1837 – 8 December 1911) was a French, later British, painter, etcher, sculptor, and medallist.
