Skeleton of a Heron is a 1620 ink by Teodoro Filippo di Liagno, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white etching of a skeleton standing on one leg by a wavy line that looks like water. The bones are drawn carefully, showing every joint and rib. The skeleton’s arms are bent at the elbows, and its head is tilted slightly forward, as if it’s balancing. The text beside it is in Latin and seems to describe the bird this skeleton resembles. The artist used fine lines to show the bones’ details, which makes the image look almost three-dimensional. Next, check out the technique: etching to see how artists like this one create sharp, precise lines.
