This drawing shows a long street in Rome, lined with tall buildings and a big church at the end. People and horses are scattered along the sidewalks, and a canal runs along the left side with a bridge over it. The buildings have flat roofs and small windows, and the street looks empty except for a few small groups of people walking. The artist used a trick to make the buildings look like they’re stretching into the distance. The lines all meet at a point, which makes the scene feel deep and three-dimensional. Next, look up Baroque to see how this style used drama and perspective.
