Horse, Ram, Goat with Kid; In the Distance a Shepherd with Flock is a 1759 ink by Francesco Londonio, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a wild ram butting heads with a goat, while a sheep and kid huddle nearby. In the background, a shepherd leans on a stick, watching over his flock. The animals are drawn with rough, textured lines, and some areas are highlighted in peachy-orange. The artist used a mix of dark lines and light shading to create depth, a trick called *white heightening*. This print is from 1759, when artists started focusing more on nature and emotion. Look up etching to see how this technique works.
Francesco Londonio (1723–1783) was an Italian painter, engraver, and scenographer, active mainly in his native Milan in a late-Baroque or Rococo style.
