Shepherd Playing a Flute with Goats is a 1764 ink by Francesco Londonio, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white scene shows a shepherd playing a wooden flute while standing near a flock of goats. The goats—some with shaggy coats, others with horns—are scattered around him, grazing or resting on a grassy hillside. Behind them, a rocky cliff and a few trees frame the scene. The artist used fine lines to show the texture of the goats’ wool and the rough terrain. The blue paper makes the dark lines stand out sharply. Next, look up etching to see how this technique works.
Francesco Londonio (1723–1783) was an Italian painter, engraver, and scenographer, active mainly in his native Milan in a late-Baroque or Rococo style.
