About this work

This painting shows two people sitting on a blanket in a wooded area. One wears a dark coat and hat, the other a red cloak. The trees around them are thick with leaves, and the light filters through in patches. The brushstrokes are loose and quick, like the scene was painted fast. The artist used watercolor, which lets the colors blend softly. The faces are not sharp—they look more like sketches. This style was new at the time.
