Apollo and the Muses is a 1570 oil by Maerten de Vos, a Mannerism work, depicting Muse, held at Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
This painting shows a group of people in a forest setting. There are nine women and one man. The man is sitting on a rock in the center, and he's not wearing any clothes. He's holding a bow and arrow. The women are all around him, and they're all wearing long dresses. Some of them are playing instruments, like a harp or a lute. The women are all looking at the man, and they seem to be listening to him. The man is looking down, and he seems to be thinking about something. The forest around them is dark and mysterious, but the sky above is bright and sunny. The artist of this painting is Maerten de Vos.
Maerten de Vos, Maerten de Vos the Elder or Marten de Vos (1532 – 4 December 1603) was a Flemish painter, known mainly for his history and allegorical paintings and portraits.
