This is a black-and-white engraving of a muscular man in armor. His chest plate has a scalloped edge, and he wears a short skirt of metal rings over his legs. A lion’s head crowns his helmet, and his right hand rests on his hip while his left holds a spear. The background is filled with swirling, leafy patterns. The artist used tiny parallel lines to build up shadows and texture—this is called *cross-hatching*. It makes the armor look heavy and the skin look rough. Next, look up technique: engraving, cross-hatching to see how artists create depth this way.
