Godefroi-Maurice, Duc de Bouillon is a 1657 ink by Robert Nanteuil, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of a man in a fancy collar and armor-like shoulder pieces. His hair is curly, and he’s looking straight ahead with a serious expression. Below him is a small shield with a coat of arms and some Latin words. The artist used fine lines and shading to show details like the fabric folds and metal buttons. This style was common in the 1600s for official portraits. Next, check out the technique: engraving.
Robert Nanteuil (French pronunciation: ; 1623 – 9 December 1678) was a French portrait artist: engraver, draughtsman and pastellist to the court of Louis XIV.
