Praying Monk is a 1826 ink by Johann Friedrich Overbeck, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a monk kneeling in prayer. His robe drapes heavily over his back, and a cross sits on his shoulder. The fabric looks thick and textured, with deep folds that catch the light. The artist used fine lines to show how the light hits the cloth, making it look almost three-dimensional. This was done with a technique called drypoint. Look up etching, drypoint, aquatint to see how artists create these kinds of textures.
Johann Friedrich Overbeck (3 July 1789 – 12 November 1869) was a German painter and a founder of the Nazarene art movement.
