The Borghese Cybele is a 1754 chalk by Augustin Pajou, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a robed figure standing on a pedestal, pointing forward with one hand. The person wears a tall crown and a long, flowing cloak that drapes over their body. The drawing is loose and quick, with light shading and some smudged areas. The figure looks like a goddess or a powerful figure from ancient times. The artist signed it "Villa Borghese," which might be where the original statue stood. If you like this style, check out Pajou, Augustin.
Augustin Pajou (French pronunciation: ; 19 September 1730 – 8 May 1809) was a French sculptor, born in Paris. At eighteen he won the Prix de Rome, and at thirty exhibited his Pluton tenant Cerbère enchaîné (now in the Louvre).
