About this work

This is a black-and-white engraving of a fancy shield with two sides. One side shows a man in armor holding a sword, standing on a rock. The other side has a lion standing on a cloud, with a crown above it. Around the shield are curly decorations and Latin words. The shield belongs to Richard Sackville, the 3rd Earl of Dorset, but only half of it is shown here. The artist used fine lines to create shadows and details, making it look three-dimensional. Next, look up engraving to see how artists like this one carved images into metal.
