Saint Roch between Saints Anthony Abbot and Catherine of Alexandria is a 1490 gouache by Raffaellino del Garbo, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This painting shows three figures standing side by side in front of a green, grassy background. The person on the left has a long white beard and wears a brown robe. The middle figure, slightly taller, holds a staff and has a halo around their head. The person on the right is dressed in a light-colored robe with a red scarf and also wears a halo. Notice how the figures are framed by an ornate, gold-leaf border with a pointed arch above the center figure. The artist used soft colors and careful details to make the robes look textured. Look up gouache to see how this painting’s matte, layered colors work.
