Self-Portrait is a 1740 ink by Richardson, Jr., Jonathan, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a person’s face in profile, turned slightly toward us. The hair is drawn with quick, scratchy lines, and the collar of a dark coat is visible at the neck. The shading is light, made mostly of small dots and strokes. The artist used a technique called drypoint to create the texture—tiny marks left by a sharp tool. This method was common in the 1700s. Next, look up etching to see how it differs from drypoint.
