Le Cloître (The Cloister) is a 1900 ink by Théo van Rysselberghe, depicting Sheet Music, held at National Gallery of Art.
This lithograph shows a quiet cloister with a yellow-brown wash over stone walls. Van Rysselberghe traveled to Italy often and sketched many cloisters like this one. The light falls just right on the arches, making shadows soft and warm. Lithography uses greasy ink on stone to print. The artist draws on the stone, then rolls ink across it. Only the drawn lines hold ink, so each print looks clean and crisp. Try another lithograph from the same year, also by Van Rysselberghe.
