About this work

Subject & Meaning

The surrounding symbols, sheep, shepherd, and the Christ Child, reinforce themes of innocence and divine espousal.

The Mystic Marriage of St Catherine depicts Saint Catherine of Alexandria in a mystical union with the Christ Child, witnessed by the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, Saint Anne, and Saint John the Baptist within a balanced, hilly landscape. The composition places a central tree under which the figures gather, emphasizing the sacred encounter. The surrounding symbols, sheep, shepherd, and the Christ Child, reinforce themes of innocence and divine espousal.

The work, painted circa 1700 by a follower of Sébastien Bourdon, reflects the late-Baroque interest in devotional intimacy and the legend's affirmation of holy virginity.

Technique & Style

The painting is executed in oil on canvas, a medium typical of seventeenth-century French and Dutch workshops. The handling favors smooth, blended modeling of flesh and drapery, with subtle glazes to articulate volume and depth. The composition is anchored by a central tree that divides the scene into two planes: a lower register of figures in quiet repose and an upper landscape that recedes through atmospheric recession.

Stylistic traits include the restrained chiaroscuro and the calm, idealized physiognomies of the holy figures, consistent with Bourdon's classicizing tendencies.

History & Provenance

The painting is attributed to a follower of the French artist Sébastien Bourdon, with Jacques Antoine Friquet de Vauroze cited as a possible creator. The earliest documented provenance places the work in the collection of Adriaan Leonard van Heteren in The Hague in 1752. Upon his death, the painting passed to his son, Adriaan Leonard van Heteren Gevers.

The final transfer to public ownership occurred on 8 June 1809, when the younger Gevers sold the piece, along with 135 others from the Kabinet Van Heteren Gevers, to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it remains in the collection.

Context

The Rijksmuseum catalogues the work as by a follower of Bourdon, with Jacques Antoine Friquet de Vauroze proposed as a possible author, reflecting scholarly caution toward workshop practices in seventeenth-century French painting. The composition's blend of Italianate landscape motifs and northern devotional iconography situates it within Bourdon's orbit. Its inclusion in the 1809 Kabinet Van Heteren Gevers acquisition reinforces its place as a French religious cabinet piece within a Dutch collection, and serves as a document of seventeenth-century French art's international circulation and of Dutch collecting practices in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
