About this work

This print shows a crowd entering a Roman amphitheater. Dark arches frame bright bodies and flowing togas. A single torch lights the scene from the left. The image comes from an 1827 opera about Pompeii’s final day. The artist designed stage sets too, blending theater with printmaking. The print copies his own stage design.
