About this work

You see a street scene in Sri Lanka. Two men hold woven baskets full of bananas, mangoes, and other fruit. A crowd of people moves past them. The painters used bright colors to show the heat and energy of the market. These images were made for people back in Europe. They wanted to see how others lived. The artists worked in colonial times, so their view wasn’t always fair or true. Want to see more scenes like this? Visit the Cleveland Museum of Art.
