Rest on the Flight into Egypt is a 1660 ink by Elisabetta Sirani, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a group of four figures resting under two tall palm trees. One person is sitting on the ground, holding a baby, while another stands nearby with a staff. The background has rough, textured lines for trees and rocks, and the whole scene looks busy but drawn with careful lines. The artist used a technique called *etching* to create this detailed image. The lines are sharp in some spots and softer in others, giving it a dynamic feel. Look up etching to see how artists like this make prints with acid and metal plates.
Elisabetta Sirani (8 January 1638 – 28 August 1665) was an Italian Baroque painter and printmaker who died in unexplained circumstances at the age of 27.
