Guy Little Theatrical Photograph is a 1865 photographic by Southwell Brothers, a Impressionism work, held at Victoria and Albert Museum.
This photo shows Miss Herbert, a Victorian actress. The Southwell Brothers took it in 1865 using an early photographic process. Back then, actors paid for these small “cartes de visite” to hand out and sell. Fans collected stacks of them, just like trading cards today. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more of these Victorian star photos.
This albumen print by the Southwell Brothers from 1865 depicts Miss Herbert in a theatrical portrait, likely produced as a carte de visite. The small photograph, mounted on card with the photographer's imprint, reflects the mid-19th-century trend of collecting actor portraits alongside scenic and artistic images. It was later removed from its album by collector Guy Tristram Little, whose extensive theatrical photographs were donated to the Victoria and Albert Museum in the early 20th century.
