Woman Seated on a Stool is a 1660 by Stefano Della Bella, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a woman sitting sideways on a stool, her back to us. She wears a loose, draped dress with thick folds, and her hair is pulled back. One foot rests on the floor, while the other dangles slightly off the stool. The lines are scratchy and dark, making the fabric look textured. The artist used quick, sketchy strokes to show movement in the fabric. This style was common in the 1600s for fast studies or prints. Stefano della Bella (18 May 1610 – 12 July 1664) was an Italian draughtsman and printmaker known for etchings of a great variety of subjects, including military and court scenes, landscapes, and lively genre scenes.
