A Selection of Twenty of the Most Picturesque Views in Paris: View of the City with the Louvre taken from the Pont Marie is a 1802 by Girtin, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a wide view of a busy river in a city. On the left, a grand building with tall towers sits by the water. Across the river, a bridge with arches carries people and carriages. Boats float near the shore, and small shelters line the riverbank. The whole scene is drawn in soft browns and grays, with faint pencil strokes. The artist focused on everyday life along the river, not just big landmarks. The sketch looks a little rough, like a quick study rather than a polished work. If you like this kind of city view, check out Romanticism.
Thomas Girtin (18 February 1775 – 9 November 1802) was an English watercolourist and etcher. A friend and rival of J. M. W. Turner, Girtin played a key role in establishing watercolour as a reputable art form.
