Head of a Matron is a 1752 chalk by Anton Johann Tischbein, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a woman’s face in profile, turned slightly toward us. Her hair is pulled back under a cap, and the lines on her skin are drawn carefully. The artist used mostly black and red chalk, leaving some areas rough and others smooth. The drawing looks like it was made quickly, focusing on the face and neck. The artist left out details like clothes or background, keeping it simple. If you like this style, check out Baroque portraits next—they often use bold lines and strong contrasts.
