Tamagawa Shugetsu|江戸近郊八景之内 玉川秋月|Autumn Moon on the Tama River is a 1838 ink by Utagawa Hiroshige, a Romanticism work, depicting Boat, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print shows a quiet river scene at dusk. A big, twisty tree stands on the shore, its branches reaching into the sky. The water is calm, with a few small boats floating near the bank. In the distance, mountains fade into a soft blue sky, and a big moon hangs low over the water. Notice how the artist used thin, repeating lines to build up dark shapes—like shadows under the tree or the boat’s hull. It’s a trick to make flat paper look three-dimensional. Try looking up cross-hatching to see how this technique works in other prints.
Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重) or Andō Hiroshige (安藤 広重), born Andō Tokutarō (安藤 徳太郎; 1797 – 12 October 1858), was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition.
