The Bath (Le Bain) is a 1894 ink by Félix Vallotton, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a simple bedroom scene. A child lies in a curved bed, reaching toward a window where two stick-like figures stand. The floor has black-and-white checkered tiles, and a bench sits near the bed. A towel hangs on the right wall, and another drapes over the left side. The artist used bold black lines against a pale yellow background, making shapes stand out sharply. This style was common in woodcut prints of the time. Next, check out woodcut to see how artists carved images into wood blocks.
