About this work

This print shows John Milton in profile, wearing a loose collar and serious expression. He wrote "Paradise Lost," an epic poem about Adam and Eve. Milton went blind later in life, but kept working. Vertue made small engravings like this for books. He copied old portraits so people could see famous faces without original paintings. This one shows Milton as a serious thinker.
