About this work

This painting shows two tall minarets with patterned brickwork and pointed tops. Below them is a simple stone building with arched doorways and small windows. The colors are soft—light blues, warm browns, and muted greys—with a faint wash of sky behind. Notice how the artist focused on the shapes and textures of the architecture, not the people. The minarets look like they’re stacked with careful detail, almost like a puzzle. If you like this style, check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more works like this.

The story of this work

Overview

The watercolour depicts the Çifte Minareli Medrese, a madrassa with two minarets, rendered by Godfrey Thomas Vigne in 1833. The title reflects Vigne’s transliteration of the Turkish phrase *iki minare*, meaning "two minarets." The work is part of a broader documentation of his travels, later detailed in his 1842 publication *Travels in Kashmir*. The drawing was acquired from the artist’s great-nephew in 1971.
