One Begs in Vain at the Door of the Deaf is a 1568 ink by Johan Wierix, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
In this engraving, a monk stands at a doorway, his hands clasped together in a pleading gesture. He is dressed in a long robe with a hood, and his head is bowed in a sign of respect. The doorway is adorned with a large ring handle, and the surrounding wall is made of brick. To the right of the doorway, a second monk stands in front of an arched doorway, his back turned to the viewer. The scene is rendered in fine detail, with intricate cross-hatching used to create texture and depth. This engraving is a fine example of Renaissance art, and it can be found at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
