Created with carved wooden blocks for each colour, the work demonstrates Yoshitoshi’s skill in rendering fine line work and vivid pigments characteristic of late‑period ukiyo-e. The artist balances delicate brush‑like outlines with bold colour fields, allowing both narrative detail and decorative surface to coexist.

Produced at the height of Yoshitoshi’s career, the print emerged just before the Meiji Restoration, a moment when Japan began opening to Western influences. While the original publisher’s name is not recorded here, the piece entered several private collections in the early twentieth century before being acquired by a museum in the 1990s.

The image reflects a transitional era when traditional festivals were being reshaped by rapid social and technological change. Yoshitoshi’s choice to depict New Year customs illustrates how artists of the period negotiated modernity while preserving familiar visual motifs, offering a visual record of cultural continuity amid transformation.
